STEADFAST:

The Jean Augustine Story

Jean Augustine, the first Black woman elected to Canada's House of Commons and the first Black woman to serve in Canada's federal Cabinet, arrived in Canada under a program known as the Caribbean Domestic Scheme. A young girl with a dream of becoming an educator, she began her first career in Canada as a domestic help. Despite her impressive educational accomplishments in her native Grenada, Jean Augustine had a mountain of hardships to conquer on her journey to creating a life of accomplishments that is now the source of immense inspiration for young Canadians.

The respect and prestige that Canada enjoys today at the world stage did not come about by chance; but by the resolve of leaders like Jean Augustine, who have dedicated their lives to uphold true Canadian values - utmost respect for civil liberties, dignity of labour, freedom of expression, and equal opportunities to explore and nurture one's potential.
